Dr. Turaka Kiran was born and raised in Andhra Pradesh, India, and completed her medical school degree (MBBS) from Guntur Medical College in Guntur, India, followed by a post-graduation degree (MD) in Ophthalmology at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, India. Later, she completed advanced training at Wills Eye Institute in Philadelphia with a fellowship in Ocular Oncology, a Medical Retina fellowship at Associated Retina Consultants in Phoenix, AZ, and a Pediatric Ophthalmology fellowship at UPMC in Pittsburgh, PA, USA. She has published more than 45 articles in both peer reviewed and non-peer reviewed medical journals and has presented her research work at both national and international meetings such as Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), American Society for Therapeutic Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), and All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS). She works as an editor and reviewer for more than 15 Ophthalmology journals and has co-authored chapters in several ophthalmology books. She is a member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), Delhi Ophthalmological Society (DOS), Asia-Pacific Ophthalmological Society (APAO), Asia-Pacific Ocular Imaging Society (APOIS), Delhi Medical Council (DMC), and Indian Medical Association (IMA). She treats children with various eye conditions, including preterm-born infants.
Dr. Turaka can fluently speak/read/write Hindi, the Indian dialect of Telugu, and English, and understands Arabic and many other Indian languages. She works as a Missionary Doctor in India, which is one of her major passions, in order to help the poor in rural areas, and has participated in numerous health clinics since her post-graduation training. Whenever she gets the opportunity, she works at charity clinics and performs free eye surgeries in very small community hospitals in rural India to help the poorest people and mentally challenged children.
