Charles T. Campbell Ophthalmic Microbiology Laboratory

Charles T. Campbell Ophthalmic Microbiology Laboratory

Established in 1973, this lab is a clinical microbiology laboratory dedicated solely to the diagnosis of infectious diseases of the eye. It is fully certified by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the College of American Pathologists, and the federal government (CLIA).

Its goal is to provide pertinent information to assist ophthalmologists and physicians of all specialties in the treatment of eye infections. Our endeavors include providing information on the best testing methods for detecting ocular pathogens, current antibiotic susceptibility data, and standard antibiotic therapies for ocular infections.

Research Focus

The Charles T. Campbell Ophthalmic Microbiology Laboratory is unique because of its two separate yet integrated components. The laboratory consists of a fully certified clinical diagnostic ophthalmic laboratory and a research laboratory that focuses on infectious diseases (diagnostics, anti-infectives, adenovirus, HSV-1, bacteria, chlamydia, fungi, and acanthamoeba) of the anterior segment of the eye and their treatment. The Charles T. Campbell Ophthalmic Microbiology Laboratory website is a resource for all interested in ocular microbiology.
